We often think of getting a dog in terms of a puppy. It’s less frequent that we consider some of the benefits of adopting an adult dog. However, there are some serious benefits to adopting a full-grown furry friend, not to mention a whole lot of love and affection!
Dogs are almost universally recognized as great human companions. In fact, dogs have been proven capable of reading human emotion. So, it’s no surprise that people rely on dogs for emotional support. Having a dog that likes to be on or next to you can be especially beneficial. And here’s where the advantage of adopting an older dog comes in: while we no doubt get a warm and fuzzy feeling from being around puppies, they typically have short attention spans that can make them less-than-ideal lap dogs. A more mature dog, say older than two or three years, will still wish to play sometimes but will have a much greater appreciation for some quality time on your lap.
While there will always be an adjustment phase when a dog moves into its new home as it discovers where its appropriate potty area is, the fact remains, adult dogs can comfortably wait longer for potty breaks and will usually be better at restricting themselves to designated areas. If you have a job away from home or don’t like getting up in the middle of the night, it’s probably best to bypass the puppy phase in favor of a full-grown dog.
As much as we love our furry friends, an untrained dog can be a difficult companion. That’s why at A Dog’s Dream, we work on housetraining with ALL of our adult dogs for adoption. Now, of course, if you have the time and ability, it is perfectly rewarding and valuable to train a dog from a puppy. But let’s be honest, many people do not have that kind of time. In those circumstances, a dog that has already received some basic behavior training and has worn off a little excess puppy energy makes an ideal choice for your new companion.
A Dog’s Dream has adult dogs (and some older puppies) ready to find their new forever home!
