Tips for traveling with dog

Spring break is here, and as the weather warms up, many of us turn our minds to travel. Maybe you’re considering finding that perfect beach, trail, or vacation rental but want to take your dog with you. This week we’ll explore a few tips to help keep your furry friend safe and comfortable while traveling.

1. Prepare Your Dog for the Trip Ahead of Time

If you’re planning a road trip for you and your dog, consider preparing them ahead of time by gradually increasing the amount of time they ride in the car with you. This can help reduce stress for your dog on the day you travel.

2. Safely Secure Your Dog in the Vehicle

Many owners allow their dogs to move around unrestrained in the vehicle. But this can be unsafe for your dog if you have sudden braking or an accident. It’s best to secure your dog in the car with either a carrier or an approved vehicle harness.

NOTE: A few states have enacted laws requiring pet restraints while driving.

3. Bring Plenty of Water and Food

Pack plenty of food and water for your dog. It’s easy for your dog to become dehydrated while you’re on the road. Additionally, it’s wise to pack enough of your dog’s food for the extent of your trip. You may not be able to buy your dog’s food in the place you’re going. Your dog could have digestive trouble if you are forced to change their food while traveling.

4. Take Regular Breaks with Your Dog

Your dog is unlikely to have as much endurance on the road as you. Plan to take breaks with your dog at least every couple of hours. Many rest areas and travel stations have fenced areas to let your dog run and waterers. Searching ahead of time to see where these areas are along your travel route can make your trip much more convenient.

5. Don’t Leave Your Dog Unattended in the Car

If the weather is sunny or hot, your vehicle can heat up to unsafe temperatures in just a couple of minutes. Even on a cold day, leaving your dog unattended could prompt other people to intervene on behalf of your dog. For these reasons, you should avoid leaving your dog alone in the vehicle.

6. Pack Familiar Items

Your dog will feel much more comfortable during your trip if they can access some of their favorite items like toys and blankets. It’s best to bring several things that will give them a feeling of stability and familiarity while they’re in unknown environments.
