Siberian Huskies are one of the most iconic dog breeds. They’re popular, too. According to the AKC, huskies are the nineteenth most registered breed in the United States. But how much do you know about the breed? This week, let’s get to know the husky.
Huskies are an enthusiastic working breed originally used for pulling sleds for long distances across Siberia. Intended to work in teams, these dogs were bred for their friendliness toward other dogs. That way, they could work efficiently as a pack. One of the most prized characteristics of huskies is their friendliness toward all, including children. However, because of their kind disposition, they are not known as vigilant guard dogs.
Huskies have thick coats which are prone to shedding. However, their coat does not require intensive maintenance. A brushing once a week and a few baths a year are sufficient. The Siberian Husky is considered a ‘natural’ breed that is effective at self-cleaning and remarkably unstinky.
Huskies come in a variety of colorings, with the AKC listing nine that are standard for the breed:
Their eyes can be brown or blue, and some huskies have one of both.
As is common among working dogs, Siberian Huskies are highly energetic and full of endurance. They require a decent-sized yard and frequent exercise. Huskies find chasing small animals a nearly irresistible source of entertainment. Additionally, huskies can be mischievous, especially when not given enough exercise.
As previously mentioned, Siberian Huskies are a very social breed. Your husky should be socialized early. A husky may find group training classes enjoyable and fulfilling.
