We’re a month away from the 4th of July, a wonderful day full of celebration! But while we humans love the cookouts and fireworks, Independence Day can be a traumatic experience for your dog. Fireworks and big crowds often create a bewildering and scary environment for our beloved pups. So, in this week’s blog, we wanted to offer some tips on how to help your dog cope with the holiday this year.
Dogs can benefit from a relatively snug vest. The gentle pressure provides them comfort and helps calm them. If you opt for this method, be sure to spend time getting your dog used to the anxiety vest before the 4th of July so that they will be used to it. Otherwise, wearing something they’re unfamiliar with could add to their overall stress level.
Another strategy to help your dog is to muffle the noise of the fireworks. This will work best if there is a fair amount of distance between your home and the nearest fireworks. By shutting doors and windows and drawing your curtains, you can reduce the noise of the fireworks. It will also help if you provide some white noise like music to help disguise any fireworks noise that gets in.
If you have a comfortable place in your home, like a crate in the bedroom, this can be a good place for your dog to spend the evening on the 4th of July. The familiarity of the space will help them feel more secure. Try leaving one of their favorite chew treats in the crate to help distract them.
If you don’t have a convenient way to help your dog cope with stress from fireworks on Independence Day, you may want to consider bringing your dog to stay at our doggie hotel. Especially if you are hosting a party on the Fourth, we think your dog will benefit from a comfortable night in our care.
